Movie Review – Miss U

The most awaited and hoped-for Nepali movie, Miss U, is released today in theatres all over Nepal. The movie features a story of three best friends, played by Namrata Shrestha, Dillip Raymajhi and Barun Rana. The movie tries to prove the saying that, a boy and a girl can’t be best friend forever. Friends of opposite sex, at some point, can fall in love and either their friendship gets scattered or, becomes weaker or, they might at best be happy couple.
Story:
Miss U‘ is the story of three best friends Sanjh (Barun Rana) , Sakshyam (Dillip Raymajhi) and Jasmine (Namrata Shrestha). Their friendship probably started in some foreign college they went together. They have a desire to stay best friends forever. Sanjh falls in love with Jasmine from the beginning but, couldn’t express his feelings towards her. On an incident in a pub, Jasmine came to know about his feelings towards her and accepts his love towards her. In one occasion when Sanjh was in Nepal to meet his family in Dashain, Sanjh and Sakshyam got drunk and had a physical relationship. The Dashain celebration incident is the turning point in the story of the three best friends. Revealing what happens after that would spoil the fun of watching the movie.
Strength and Weakness:
The director, Suresh Darpan Pokharel, had previously said that the movie is not a formula movie based on Bollywood masala. His statement holds true, Miss U doesn’t seem to be inspired by Bollywood movies as in his previous movie “Kaslai Diu Yo Jowan”. As a director, he has done a good job. He has also tried to showcase beautiful locations abroad, in appropriate scenes. He has failed to strengthen the story so that the story ‘touches’ the audience. Although, being successful in shooing masala type of contents, he has failed to supplement it with something more interesting.
The story and screenplay of Suraj Subba ‘Nalbo’ is appreciable. Story and it’s flow is really nice and logical. All the scenes and situations of the movie are related to each other. There isn’t any such scene or dialogues that feel out of context for the story. Cinematography of Dhiraj Jung Shah and Raju Bikram Thapa is nice. Background score by Rajan Ishan is suitable and reflects the situations. Songs are also melodious and well performed except a ghazal sung by Baboo Bogati. The ghazal seem quite long and ineffective.
Actors :
One of the most important factors of this movie is the comeback of Namrata Shrestha in a feature movie. Her fans and supporters will surely love her back in the big screen. Dillip Raymajhi’s character as Sakshyam is similar to the character of his first super hit movie, ‘Darpan Chaya‘. Dilip has also performed well in the movie. This movie is believed to determine the future of his career on Nepali film industry.
New actor Barun SJB Rana’s role is also very important in the movie. Although, Barun is handsome and good looking, another actor/ singer Yash Kumar had given his voice to his character. That might be the reason, his expression of the body and face doesn’t go well with the vocal expression. This shortcoming has made the character of Sanjh weak. Proper time and effort might have corrected the problem. Barun shouldn’t have been chosen for the role if he was known to have problem with dialogue delivery. Being an important character in the movie, the director should have taken an extra effort to correct the dubbing and dialogue delivery.
Summary:
Over all, ‘Miss U‘ is a good movie with a nice and logical story of three friends. Although, the director has tried to be creative by avoiding Bollywood masala, the movie seems to be influenced by Korean movies and serials. Although the movie has a good story and is made well, audience however won’t get any emotions or feelings from the tragic situation of the movie. One of the biggest drawback: the tragic ending of the movie won’t leave a mark in the hearts of the audience.
Miss U‘ will be loved by the youths and especially the fans of Namrata Shrestha. The movie could have been a strong competitor to other blockbuster movies at box office but, it has missed to generate emotional touch in the heart of audience. Fan of Korean movies and serials would probably love the movie.
Yes, Suresh Darpan Pokharel has given a good movie to the Nepali movie industry and the youths but, one can’t deny that he has also missed making it big!

Loot – new confidence in Nepali movie industry

This year had been a bit different for Nepali film industry. There used to be a trend in our film industry that, a movie require star cast to be a hit. This year, neither Rajesh Hamal nor Rekha Thapa could ensure a good box office collection. At the same time, new director, new music director, and few struggling actors in ‘Loot‘ proved that a good movie doesn’t need star cast.
Yes, ‘Loot’ is still running in theaters and is extending its market to overseas too.
loot
The fact that ‘Loot’ has become a hot cake topic among the film makers and movie goers left me wondering: is it such a wonderful movie? Should everybody watch it ?
I have no doubt, ‘Loot’ is a good movie. But, excellent? Not really!
If you haven’t watched it yet, you will enjoy if you decide to go. But, you won’t miss anything if you decide not to watch.
Now, you might ask, "Didn’t ‘Loot’ deserve such a huge box office collection?"
Yes, it deserves success and the collection in Nepalese context. Because this year, no other movies come close to Loot in terms of quality.
At this time, ‘Loot’ was an important contribution to our film industry that brought some changes for the betterment of Nepali movie industry. ‘Loot’ has shown a ray of hope for new comers and talented artists in the industry. Days of star cast, glamour and action is yet to be over in Nepali film industry. But, there is equal opportunity for new entries. Film critics have started to question the future of evergreen rulers of Nepali film like Rajesh Hamal, Biraj Bhatt, and Rekha Thapa who were ruling till last year.
In the past, although movies with new actors and film makers used to get a good media coverage, in the box office collection they used to be left far behind. Movies with popular artists like Aryan Sigdel and Namrata Shrestha  and appreciated directors like Alok Nembang and Bhushan Dahal have made good movies but they weren’t successful in achieving a good collection. That was one of the reasons, producers were confident and ready to invest huge amount on the basis of star cast and new entries were discouraged.
But now, ‘Loot’ has changed the perception of artists and producers by doing a good business. These days, some producers seem ready to invest their money on new talents too. One of my friends quoted one of the producers telling, ‘Bring a script like that of ‘Loot’, I am willing to invest in it.’
New talents? Get ready to conquer!

Movie Review – Sathi Ma Timro

At the time when two or even four movies are being released every week, there was only one movie released this week – Bhuwan KC’s “Sathi Ma Timro”. “Sathi Ma Timro” is a story of a struggling movie producer and his son, played by child artist Shirshak Sapkota in leading role.
Story:
Saathi ma timro is a story of a son Avisekh K.C (Bhuwan K C), a struggling film producer trying to fulfill his father’s wish. In his movie venture, Avisekh lost everything including his wife Puja (Richa Ghimire), his house, his car, and his luxurious life. All he was left with was his son Anmol (played by Shirshak Sapkota). Although, he had numerous problems in pursuing his father’s dream project, a movie named Saathi Ma Timro, he tried his best to keep his son Anmol from being aware of such problems. A struggling actress Ashmi (Rekha Thapa) was impressed by Avisekh got attracted towards him. Although deep inside she loved Avisekh, she couldn’t express her love to him.
Will Avisekh be able to finish his father’s dream project? Will his little son Anmol know about the problems his father faced? Will Ashmi be able to express her love to Avisekh? Will Puja come back in the life of Avisekh?
To get the answers to these questions, it would be better to watch the movie itself.
Strength and weakness:
Music is situational and melodious, action is good, script and dialogues are good and filled with emotions, cinematography is good. All that makes the movie enjoyable and it will also touch your emotions at times. It will also make you laugh occasionaly. Dialogues are very effective in touching the heart and mind of audiance. The dialogue also has nepali feel and it also represents our culture and society.
Talking about weakness – there is no such major mistake that might ruins the movie. One of the worst part of the movie is its ending. The movie starts making the audiences emotional but its end is not that emotional. Although the climax can’t be termed ‘bad’, it is not that effective.
The movie is targeted to the fans of Bhuwan KC and ithas all the ingredients to make it impressive to those fans and supporters. But, for the youngesters, there is not much excitement. The movie’s story, making, presentation, promotion etc. is all targeted towards those the group of people who are believed to be the “real viewers of Nepali movies”. So, “Saathi Ma Timro” will appeal to the lovers of masala movies.
Actors / Actresses
Bhuwan K C has justified his role as a father as well as a son. He is known of pure Nepali flavor in his acting and that can also be seen in this movie. Another important character, the child artist, Shirshak Sapkota, has done a good job in his debut movie. Shirshak’s role is impressive and make viewer’s laugh. There is a good chemistry between Bhuwan and Shirshak and it is another key factor for the entertainment of viewers.
Rekha Thapa has performed well in a role of a young girl dreaming to be an actress. She has done good acting in comedy as well as emotional scenes. Although Richa Ghimire was not featured in any promotional materials, it was surprising to see her in an important role in the movie. Richa has also performed well. In addition to these actors, many other senior artists like Dinesh DC, Kiran KC, Kamal Krishna Poudel are also featured in the movie and they all have done well in their roles.
Another important and attraction of this movie is the real son of Bhuwan KC, Anmol KC. Although everyone had be excited about his special appearance in the movie, his special appearance is limited to only a song. All he has done is lip sync on an unrelated song. As he hasn’t done any acting, there is no way to judge Anmol’s acting talent.
Summary:
The star cast and the way of promotion says that “Saathi Ma Timro” is targeted to the regular Nepali movie viewers and fans of Bhuwan KC. The movie is made perfect for those types of viewers. The movie has melodious songs, comedy, family drama, few action scenes and some scenes that make people cry. Movie has a higher chance to do good business outside Kathmandu valley. There are plenty of valley dwellers too who would love watching this type of movie.
